Migration of Surfactants in Pressure-sensitive Adhesive Films and the Impact on Performance Properties
نویسندگان
چکیده
Results are reviewed from a study on the distribution of surfactants in pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) films subsequent to the coating process. The PSAs are water-based acrylics synthesized with n-butyl acrylate, vinyl acetate and methacrylic acid and two commercially available surfactants, disodium (nonylphenoxypolyethoxy)ethyl sulfosuccinate (anionic) and nonylphenoxypoly(ethyleneoxy) ethanol (nonionic). The ratio of these surfactants was varied, while the total surfactant mass content was held constant. Surfactant distributions in adhesive films were investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and confocal Raman microscopy (CRM). AFM images demonstrate the tendency of the anionic surfactant to aggregates at film surfaces inhibiting latex particle coalescence, while CRM shows its enrichment near film interfacial regions. Results indicate that surfactant distributions are governed in large part by surfactant compatibility with the polymer phase. Also discussed is the influence of surfactant content and distribution on the performance of PSA films.

Identification and Analysis of the Migration of Primary Aromatic Amines from Flexible Food Packaging by High-performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
Background and Objectives: Primary Aromatic Amines (PAAs) are contaminants that can migrate from food flexible packaging. The main origin of these compounds is polyurethane adhesives used in the laminating process of multilayer films. Residual aromatic di-isocyanates of the reaction of adhesive polymerization migrate into the food, and are hydrolyzed to PAAs by the moisture of food. 2,4- and 2,...
متن کاملProperties of Water-based Acrylic Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Films in Aqueous Environments
Water-base pressure sensitive adhesives dominate the market of adhesives applied to paper. These materials are formulated as emulsions of acrylic polymers in water. Surfactants are used to stabilize the hydrophobic polymer particles. When water-based adhesives are dried, particles coalesce and surfactant segregates to interparticle domains that provide pathways for water to enter the adhesive f...

The distributions of three sodium alkyl sulfate surfactants in dry adhesive films cast from water-based latexes were characterized using confocal Raman microscopy (CRM) and contact angle (CA) and tack measurements. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS), and sodium octadecyl sulfate (SODS) were added to dialyzed commercial adhesive latex at various concentrations. Uneven ...
متن کاملNear-Surface Composition Profiles and the Adhesive Properties of Statistical Copolymer Films Being Model Systems of Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Films
Statistical copolymer films that consist of two types of monomers, a sticky and a glassy monomer, are investigated. These model systems of pressure-sensitive adhesive films are probed with X-ray reflectivity and mechanical tack measurements. For the first time, composition profiles along the surface normal in the near-surface region are monitored. The influence of the type of monomers being cop...
